GEM
Giving Experience Meaning
GEM is an organisation which was set up in 1998 by Lancashire Advocacy to support people who suffer from mental health problems to become Direct Experience Trainers.
*
GEM is recognised through out Lancashire by Social Services, Health, Education and the Voluntary Sector as a valuable resource.
*
A Direct Experience Trainer is a past or present user of mental health care services. They train Service Providers' staff and management, by sharing their personal experience of how it feels to be on the receiving end of those services.
*
GEM aims to make a direct impact on service providers, and to turn negative experiences into positive ones in order to help other users and carers.
*
GEM attempts to raise awareness of mental health issues by a process of dispelling stigma, prejudice and myth.
*
Sessions are friendly, supportive and there is no pressure on the individual to participate or make a commitment they cannot keep.
*
If you are interested in becoming involved with GEM then please contact us at Lancashire Advocacy (see below for details)
