Self Advocacy
Self Advocacy is about people speaking up for themselves. Some people have had their views ignored, and have been valued less than others, because they have been labelled as disabled, disadvantaged, mentally ill or having learning difficulties. People who need extra help of some kind are often treated as though other people know what's best for them.
Self Advocacy is about people deciding for themselves how they would like to live their lives, and making their own choices. Saying what they think of the services they get (such as day centres, home helps and so on) might be part of that. People often learn the skills of Self Advocacy in a group which they run themselves.
Lancashire Advocacy is committed to promoting, supporting and developing Self Advocacy across Lancashire. We have a Self Advocacy support worker who is dedicated to working within Self Advocacy groups.
The ways in which Lancashire Advocacy can help includes:
- A database of Self Advocacy groups and activity in Lancashire
- Support and guidance developing new groups
- Trouble shooting problems and difficulties within existing groups
- An extensive resource library
- Peer support meetings for staff who facilitate Self Advocacy groups
- We host meetings of the Lancashire Self Advocacy partnership made up of representatives from different Self Advocacy groups around Lancashire
- Session packs and guides for new and established groups
